What I Did on My Summer Vacation

WHAT I DID ON MY SUMMER VACATION

When Eric Croft (tour guide extraordinaire) asked me to partner in Lunenburg Town Walking Tours this summer my heart jumped with an immediate “yes”. I’d long thought Eric had the best job in the world. What’s not to love: walking around in the fresh air, talking to great folks about a town I adore. Not that I didn’t have some cool adventures in employment as a student – tree enumerator (seriously), oral historian, waitress, interpreter – but at 48 (well, almost; the big day is the 24th) I find myself in the ultimate “summer job”.

At it since early June, I’ve already toured hundreds of visitors from around the world (including two women from Japan from whom I learned that hand and facial signals can go a very long way in mutual understanding!) and have found that most folks are looking for the same thing: authenticity. Sure they want facts to frame up the experience - the whos, whats and whens of the place – but more so they respond to the stories. It’s the yarns, whether they be about high-school boys catching guff for skipping school to go lumping, the ghost of Edna K, or my very personal connection to Bluenose II, that seem to delight and engage my guests.

What a pleasure it’s been to meet such wonderful people! I look forward to hundreds more who will become part of the creation of the story, “How I Spent My Summer Vacation”.

Happy trails,

Shelah
